Guidebook Revision
Last Chance for Contributions- Due June 1
I'm accepting action photos (link at left) until June 1.
I will also accept last-minutecontributions until June 1. These should be new routes not in the current edition OR changes in ratings that you've noticed this spring when you're climbing.
Remember, I do not read other web sites to get information. I must get any info directly from other climbers-that's you.
September 25, 2010: Guidebook Update Resumes
The publication board at Falcon has approved a revision of Rock Climbing: Minnesota and Wisconsin, so the guidebook update is back in progress.
FAQ
Why did you cancel the revision?
The publisher wouldn't respond to me prior to my Everest trip in Spring 2009. Then I had my frostbite injuries from Everest and those two problems led me to cancel the revision.
Why have you resumed the revision, and are you really serious this time?
A change in personnel at Falcon and my continued improvement (physically). And yes, I'm serious. It will happen.
How will the revision differ from the current edition?
- It will be printed in color!
- The suggested list price will hopefully be $30 (the current edition is $25)
- All new route and action photos
- Complete updates of all areas in the current edition, including new routes
What won't be in the new edition?
I won't be adding new areas (except for Sandstone). This allows us to print a color guidebook at a reasonable price in a reasonable amount of time. You can look up the areas not included in this guide on various web sites.
What's the timeline?
Our goal is to have the new guide available Spring 2012. Printing takes 9 months, so the revision needs to be completed by June 2011.
The only deadline you need to remember is that all comments/input must be submitted to me by DECEMBER 31.
Who can help, and how?
If you have a year or more of outdoor climbing experience, you can help by sending me your comments. You can download the Contributor Packet using the link at top left.
I will be accepting submissions for action photos as well. Click the link above left.
How much will I get paid for contributing information or submitting photos?
Nothing, which is about what I make from this guidebook. Seriously. But without your help the revision won't be as good as it could be.
Lots of your difficulty ratings/ quality ratings/ descriptions are wrong.
Then help me get them right by contributing.
I prefer to send you an email with information rather than filling out the spreadsheets.
Sorry, but the only way I can use your input is if you submit it in the spreadsheets provided. I hope to have at least 100 contributors and there are ~800 routes in the book. And I had parts of seven fingers chopped off last year so typing ain't easy. The spreadsheets allow me to simplify the process considerably.
I post all of my comments on --------.com so you can download them from that site.
Sorry, but that's a violation of copyright. Info from my guide can't be posted on another web site, and I can't use the information from those sites. Plus see the previous question.
I have a climbing area that really should be in the revised guide.
Does the landowner permit climbing? Are there more than 20 routes that will commonly be climbed? If so, email the address in the Contributor Packet and we'll discuss it.
How can you revise the guidebook if you can't climb that well because of your injuries?
Unfortunately, climbing is a miniscule fraction of the time spent writing a guidebook. The really good climbers know this and most are smart enough not to write a guide. My diminished typing skills are a far greater handicap.
How can I keep track of the progress on the revision?
The main source of information will be the blog for this site. I also have a Facebook Page that you can follow. I won't post more often than every couple of weeks.
